A Gameplay Loop That Ebbs And FlowsĪs much as I love the story it would have been a bore to try and muddle through it if the gameplay didn’t back it up, though thankfully it does. Each shrine tells you a story that reveals more about the Ursee and its people. Here I’m perched at a shrine during a story mission, learning about the history of the Ursee. Each of the three campaigns grounded the Ursee and its people further, and introduced what was by far my favourite campaign with the brewers of Casetllus, voiced by the incredibly talented Christopher Gee. It looks like The Falconeer is coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 this summer, as Japanese retailers have listed The Falconeer: Warrior Edition for Sony’s consoles with a release date on 5th August. What also helped to flesh out the world this time however were the addition of three mini campaigns added with this release and the expansion Edge Of The World. This isn’t an isolated retailer jumping the gun, as Amazon Japan, Rakuten and Yodobashi all corroborate the release, being published locally by 3goo. The physical edition will have a 38-page digital game guide and include a 29-track digital soundtrack. It will also include “additional content featuring dragons,” which seems to refer to the DLC “ The Hunter” which was the only paid post-release content for the game. The Falconeer was released in November 2020 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The game is also available via Xbox Game Pass. Neither party has officially confirmed a port to PlayStation, but it would seem that a 9-month console exclusivity period was in place. ![]() ![]() The game was created by solo developer Tomas Sala, an impressive achievement considering the size and lore of the game world, the flight mechanics. Jason reviewed the game upon release and while he enjoyed it and the world it created, the gameplay didn’t quite catch his imagination as much as he hoped it would: Sala has also continued to expand his creation, rebalancing the game’s flight mechanics, improving enemy AI, adding a Kraken, and a whole new piratical faction in Atun’s Folly. I find myself a little perplexed by The Falconeer. I still thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game, but it almost felt like I was doing so in spite of how I felt about the gameplay. ![]() I do think The Falconeer is going to find an audience that loves it wholeheartedly, but also that there will be plenty of others for whom this falls a bit flat too. You can read our full review here, but Sala has done considerable work since then to improve and grow his game. After making a name for itself last year around the launch of the Xbox Series X, The Falconeer: Warrior Edition will make its way to both PlayStation 5 and PS4 on 5th August 2021. This enhanced version of the game will include every piece of DLC and update released so far as well as an upcoming expansion named Edge of the World. It'll cost £24.99/$29.99 on the PS Store, or you can pick up a physical copy for the same price. PS4 owners can also upgrade to the PS5 version free of charge.Īlongside every piece of post-launch content, the Warrior Edition will also feature re-recorded voice work and a more streamlined tutorial. PS5 owners can look forward to Haptic Feedback implementation, but 60 frames-per-second is the standard for both PS4 and the current-gen system. ![]() Taking advantage of the PS5 DualSense controller was an important factor during the development of the port for one-man team Tomas Sala, who explained to us the sort of feelings he hopes Haptic Feedback conveys. "A lot of players of The Falconeer usually note the strong contrasts in the game, you are either peacefully gliding along the scenery or in a frenzy of combat trying to stay alive and shoot down your targets. The smoothness of flying can really feel meditative, which makes the combat much more jarring and impactful. The haptics on the DualSense can really hammer that home, the sense that you are now in a proper dogfight. It wakes you up and really gives you a sense of weight to the weapons that simply wasn't possible before." I love that contrast, so it fits beautifully. One of the more interesting features of The Falconeer: Warrior Edition is that Sala has gone back and actually reworked the tutorial. He says the original opening threw players in at the deep end, so entire sections have been cut out for the updated version.
